According to a recent Government Accountability Office report, the U.S. Space Force’s next generation missile warning constellation’s launch will likely be delayed beyond the original anticipated launch of 2025. The Next Generation Overhead Persistent Infrared constellation (OPIR) is being developed to eventually replace the Department of Defense’s main missile warning satellite program. The Next Gen OPIR will use a combination of infrared sensors in geostationary and elliptical orbits to detect missile launches from anywhere on Earth. The planned expenditure by Space Force on this program is $14.4b through 2025
After Hyundai purchased a controlling stake in Boston Dynamics this past June, they have begun deploying BD’s dog-esque robot, Spot, to monitor worker’s safety on the production floor. The Spots Hyundai will use are equipped with a thermal camera and LiDAR sensing technology that will enable them to recognize people, doors, and obstacles among other things. Hyundai has said it plans to advance its robotic capabilities to improve its production facilities in the future, including self-driving vehicles and Urban Air Mobility solutions like personal air vehicles.
Argus, named for the Greek mythological monster who had 100 eyes, is the name of the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s new machine learning risk management program that aims to reduce time spent manually monitoring HUD’s program grantees by 75%. There has been an increase in requests since the start of COVID-19 and Argus’s developers hope the process for reviewing grants will be cut down from four months to one. Although cutting down on fraud and waste are huge concerns during the pandemic, more than a third of federal, state, and local entities have yet to implement any sort of technology in their anti-fraud programs.
