History Made: Marine Corps Develops Missile-Firing Robot | National Interest

The Unites States Marine Corps is in the process of developing a mobile, expeditionary, missile equipped ground robot capable of launching attacks from land or sea. Teleoperated, the Remotely-Operated Ground Unit for Expeditionary Fires (ROGUE Fires) system is a survivability-enhancing device of U.S. Marine Corps’ Navy Marine Expeditionary Ship Interdiction System (NMESIS). The fire control system is completely separate from the autonomous parts in that they still require full human authorization.

Machine learning algorithm may identify patients at risk for extended opioid use| Healio

Dr Joseph H. Schwab and colleagues have developed several algorithms using data from shoulder surgery patients that can help identify patients who may be at greater risk for opioid use after their prescription runs out. The bot identified previous opioid use and percentage of home zip code residents below the poverty line as key indicators. The best way to integrate bots like these into the workflow of physicians is still up for debate.

UK armed forces confirm cyber as fifth dimension of warfare | The Daily Swig

The UK plans to make cybersecurity and information warfare a top priority in coming years. A “5th Dimension” of warfare, General Sir Patrick Sanders, head of UK Strategic Command relayed the message “We’re going to need to think radically about the career model, training, and education that accelerates the pace of this evolution because if we don’t adapt, we will at best become exquisite but irrelevant – and at worst we will die.” As the modern world becomes more dependent on the efficient transfer of information, all modern armies will be in fierce competition for the greatest information warfare waging abilities.

How Epic Games Made a Dent in Apple’s App Store Domination | The New Yorker

Epic released a mobile version of Fortnite last August. To upload funds into player wallets, users could either pay $9.99 directly through the Apple App Store or $7.99 through a new option called “Epic direct payment”. This was an intentional and blatant violation of Apple’s in-app purchase rules. Epic hoped that Apple would remove them from the App Store, which they did, opening them up to antitrust suits based on anticompetitive behavior. Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers ruled against Apple and Google, who removed Fortnite from its store for the same reason, in a victory for developers who don’t wish to give Apple a cut of their profits.
