Paradigm-changing possibilities for modern warfare 101 | The National Interest

F-22 fighter jets, F-35 fighter jets, and MQ-9 Reaper unmanned aerial vehicles all communicated targeting data in real-time over an encrypted, radio-enabled safe radio wave data link, putting the idea of an interconnected system of “meshed” nodes further to actual reality. Many of the most recent technological advancements, such as Northrop Grumman’s Freedom 550 software configurable radio, are designed with the goal of maintaining information reliability and safety in mind. For example, sneaky fifth-generation systems can reveal their geolocation by transmitting a significant volume of multi-frequency information. The more visible an electronic signature, emission, or transmission is to an adversary, the more likely it is to be detected. The problem is to allow connectivity while keeping “stealth mode” in place.
