In a world first, South Africa grants a patent to an artificial intelligence system | Quartz Africa

A recently developed South African invention for a “food container built on fractal geometry” appears to be quite commonplace at first sight. Interlocking food containers that are simple for robots to grab and pile are the subject of the invention. The invention, upon further study, is far from ordinary. That’s because the creator is an artificial intelligence (AI) system named DABUS, not a human. Stephen Thaler, a pioneer in the field of AI and programming, designed DABUS (which stands for “device for the autonomous bootstrapping of unified sentience”). The system produces new technologies by simulating human brainstorming. DABUS is a sort of AI that is sometimes referred to as “creativity machines” because of their ability to function independently and in complicated ways.
