The efficiency of employing drones to detect freshwater sources on Easter Island has been established by researchers at Binghamton University, State University of New York. Freshwater is a limited commodity on Rapa Nui, as the island is known to its native inhabitants, despite being surrounded by a massive ocean. Because the pixel sizes are too wide to capture the coastal seeps in any detail, satellite imaging cannot be used to identify freshwater sources on Rapa Nui, according to DiNapoli. A drone, on the other hand, can gather high-resolution photographs while flying at lower altitudes.
