Argus, named for the Greek mythological monster who had 100 eyes, is the name of the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s new machine learning risk management program that aims to reduce time spent manually monitoring HUD’s program grantees by 75%. There has been an increase in requests since the start of COVID-19 and Argus’s developers hope the process for reviewing grants will be cut down from four months to one. Although cutting down on fraud and waste are huge concerns during the pandemic, more than a third of federal, state, and local entities have yet to implement any sort of technology in their anti-fraud programs.
