Synthetic Media: How deepfakes could soon change our world | CBS

You may not be familiar with the term “synthetic media,” sometimes known as “deep fakes,” but our military, law enforcement, and intelligence organizations are. They’re hyper-realistic video and audio recordings created with artificial intelligence and “deep” learning to create “fake” content, also known as “deep fakes.” The US government is growing concerned that they could be used to propagate misinformation and commit crimes. That’s because deepfake developers have the ability to make people say or do anything they want, at least on our screens. Most people in the United States have no concept of how far technology has progressed in only four years, let alone the dangers, disruptions, and opportunities that come with it.
