The 1996 unopened copy of Nintendo’s Super Mario 64 sold for $1.56 million at Heritage Auctions in Dallas, beating the previous track for the purchase of a single video game. According to the auction house, Super Mario 64 was the best-selling Nintendo 64 game and the first to showcase the Mario character in 3D. The transaction comes after an untouched copy of Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda sold for $870,000 at auction on Friday. Heritage’s video game expert, Valarie McLeckie, said the auction house was surprised to see a game priced for more than $1 million just two days after the Zelda game surpassed the world record.
