The US military says China is developing anti-satelite weapons | Futurism.com

During a webinar for an intelligence-security trade group last week, Rear Admiral Michael Studeman issued a warning that China is developing systems with capacities ranging from “glittering to blocking, to ballistic kill-from-the-ground, from orbit.” This is the newest alert from a senior US military official about China’s production of anti-missiles aimed at US spacecraft. The US Director of National Intelligence issued a report in April claiming that the Tiangong space station constituted a low-orbit security danger to the US, claiming that the facility was built to “obtain the military, economic, and prestige advantages that Washington has acquired from space leadership.”

New soft robot has optimized swimming properties | Slash Gear

Singapore University of Technology and Design researchers have merged two methodologies to establish a unified procedure for developing unique automated processes for designing and building customized soft robots. The soft robots were created to withstand a marine environment, and the method centered on customizing the fin structure to see how the alterations would affect the robots’ swimming ability. Researchers discovered that the improved composite fins were 50% faster than a counterpart with conventionally casted soft fins after improvement. It was also a fraction of a second faster than a robot with a rigid fin.

Improving stroke recovery prediction using machine learning | Tech Explorist

When the blood flow to the brain is cut off, a stroke develops. A stroke can often result in long-term damage. And the road to recovery from a stroke is long and winding. With this in mind, an international team of scientists led by EPFL has created a system that analyzes and predicts the future of stroke victims using data from the brain’s connectome and machine learning. The data was fed into a “support-vector machine,” or SVM, which is a type of machine-learning system that utilizes examples to translate an input into an output. The SVM was trained to identify between individuals who recovered naturally and those who did not have their whole-brain structural connectomes recovered naturally.

Paradigm-changing possibilities for modern warfare 101 | The National Interest

F-22 fighter jets, F-35 fighter jets, and MQ-9 Reaper unmanned aerial vehicles all communicated targeting data in real-time over an encrypted, radio-enabled safe radio wave data link, putting the idea of an interconnected system of “meshed” nodes further to actual reality. Many of the most recent technological advancements, such as Northrop Grumman’s Freedom 550 software configurable radio, are designed with the goal of maintaining information reliability and safety in mind. For example, sneaky fifth-generation systems can reveal their geolocation by transmitting a significant volume of multi-frequency information. The more visible an electronic signature, emission, or transmission is to an adversary, the more likely it is to be detected. The problem is to allow connectivity while keeping “stealth mode” in place.

Unopened Super Mario 64 game from 1996 sells for $1.56M | AP News

The 1996 unopened copy of Nintendo’s Super Mario 64 sold for $1.56 million at Heritage Auctions in Dallas, beating the previous track for the purchase of a single video game. According to the auction house, Super Mario 64 was the best-selling Nintendo 64 game and the first to showcase the Mario character in 3D. The transaction comes after an untouched copy of Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda sold for $870,000 at auction on Friday. Heritage’s video game expert, Valarie McLeckie, said the auction house was surprised to see a game priced for more than $1 million just two days after the Zelda game surpassed the world record.
