Tough Conditions and Contested Communication Are Forcing the US Military To Reinvent AI | Defense One

The US Special Operations Command, or SOCOM, is collaborating with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, or DARPA, on new projects and experiments to introduce artificial intelligence to operators operating in areas where the computational resources and data needed to operate commercial AI applications aren’t available. This entails fully re-inventing artificial intelligence from the ground up and gaining entirely new insights into how humans interact with it. With this, SOCOM is creating an entirely new concept of artificial intelligence to determine which problems operators face could be solved with a small amount of AI.

CSO: Space is the ‘Wild, Wild West,’ Requiring New Norms for Operating in Orbit | Air Force Magazine

As more satellites are being launched, the space junk increases as well, making space a “congested domain.” Currently, the Space Force is tracking around 30,000 pieces of debris. But, according to Chief of Space Operations Gen. John W. “Jay” Raymond, there are “probably half a million other objects” in orbit “that are too small to track.” With this, the Space Force is set to establish operating norms in orbit to avoid added danger.

The new technology, a specially developed machine learning algorithm, was trained to analyze a mixed data set of brain scans of 1,143 people with healthy brains and those diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.

Navy to Experiment with Information Warfare Commanders Operating from Maritime Operations Centers | USNI News

After witnessing the effectiveness of an information warfare commander in operating in a carrier strike group, the US Navy is planning to test out placing IWC in its Maritime Operations Centers. Specifically, the Navy is set to test out the idea in the upcoming Large Scale Exercise 2021. The troops are hoping to get more information from the experiment to provide the Navy and Marine Corps the chance to perform drills to test the services’ various operating concepts.
