Americans Need a Bill of Rights for an AI-Powered World | Wired

Data-driven technology has changed the world in the last ten years. We’ve seen what’s possible when massive volumes of data are collected, and artificial intelligence is trained to comprehend it. The options are limitless. However, these new instruments have also resulted in major issues. Many factors influence what robots learn, including the data used to train them. It will be difficult but necessary to create a bill of rights for an AI-powered world. America has been a work in progress since its creation, aiming at values, admitting flaws, and working to correct them. We should hold AI to the same standard. It is our collective responsibility to guarantee that data-driven technologies reflect and respect democratic principles.

NASA will shoot rocket at asteroid to test ‘planetary defense’ strategy | Washington Post

For the first time NASA will launch a spacecraft next month with the intention of colliding it with an asteroid to change its course. The Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission will occur on Nov. 24, NASA said. A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket will be launched from the Vandenberg Space Force Base northwest of Santa Barbara, CA. A pair of asteroids that orbit the sun and occasionally come close to Earth are the target.

Ongoing Cyber Threats to U.S. Water and Wastewater Systems Sector Facilities | CISA

A combined Cybersecurity Advisory (CSA) from CISA, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the National Security Agency (NSA) describes ongoing cyber risks to the US Water and Wastewater Systems (WWS) Sector. This event, which involves cyber intrusions resulting in ransomware attacks, jeopardizes WWS facilities’ capacity to deliver clean, drinkable water to their residents and successfully manage their wastewater. The joint CSA offers a wide range of mitigations and tools to help WWS Sector establishments improve operational resilience and cybersecurity.

Synthetic Media: How deepfakes could soon change our world | CBS

You may not be familiar with the term “synthetic media,” sometimes known as “deep fakes,” but our military, law enforcement, and intelligence organizations are. They’re hyper-realistic video and audio recordings created with artificial intelligence and “deep” learning to create “fake” content, also known as “deep fakes.” The US government is growing concerned that they could be used to propagate misinformation and commit crimes. That’s because deepfake developers have the ability to make people say or do anything they want, at least on our screens. Most people in the United States have no concept of how far technology has progressed in only four years, let alone the dangers, disruptions, and opportunities that come with it.
